Press Release

Broad Creek Clean-up Scheduled for November 16

The Outside Foundation to Host Litter Clean-Up Event

The Outside Foundation announced today that they will be hosting a kayak based clean-up of the Broad Creek on November 16th from 1-4PM at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina. Volunteers are needed and invited.

The event made possible through donated kayak rentals from Outside Hilton Head as well as a grant from Beaufort County Public Works’ ‘Keep Beaufort County Beautiful’ project to cover operating supplies.

Those interesting in volunteering for the event can call Outside Hilton Head at (843)686-6996 to reserve a kayak for use free of charge or they may bring their own kayaks. Power boats are also welcome. This is the second clean-up in 2014 hosted by the Outside Foundation, the first of which was held in March and saw a turnout of 87 volunteers, who collected over 300lbs of trash.

“This event is a great way to give back to our community and have fun doing it! The Broad Creek supports a wide variety of the Islands’ flora and fauna, and we all have a responsibility to preserve its health for future Hilton Head Islanders. I encourage all Island and Bluffton residents to come out for this festive day on the water!” said Jean Fruh, the event’s organizer and Executive Director of the Outside Foundation.

This cleanup is made possible by a grant from Beaufort County Public Works ‘Keep Beaufort County Beautiful’ project, which is an affiliate of ‘Keep America Beautiful’. The projects goal is to ‘educate individuals about litter prevention and ways to reduce, reuse, recycle, and properly manage waste materials.’ Outside Hilton Head will be providing free use of its kayak fleet to volunteers as well as recycling for 100% of trash collected.
