Colorado’s Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area Offers Labor Day Entertainment

Sept. 1 SALIDA, Colo. – Labor Day is a long, fun weekend along the Arkansas River, and the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is hosting two end-of-summer events. On Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m., local artists and musicians Cactus Jack and Linda Marie will perform original western folk music around a blazing campfire. Join the musicians and AHRA naturalist Claire Davis this Friday at AHRA’s Ruby Mountain Campground.

Back by popular demand, Ruby Mountain Campground AHRA volunteer geologist Bob Hickey and AHRA naturalist Claire Davis will take folks on a journey through time with “Geology, Granite and Gems” on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. at the Ruby Mountain Campground. The Arkansas River valley is a Rocky Mountain geological paradise with many treasures to discover. Following Saturday’s presentation, Bob and Claire will lead participants on a short hike in the hills surrounding Ruby Mountain.

Those interested in attending either program should meet at Ruby Mountain Campground, south of Buena Vista on Highway 285, turning on County Road 301, and then taking County Road 300 to the campground.

The programs are free of charge, but a valid State Parks pass is required for all attending the program. For more information, call the AHRA office at (719) 539-7289.
