Canadian Skier Dies After Crashing in World Cup Skicross Event

Nik Zoricic, a 29 year-old Canadian skicrosser, was killed after crashing into the safety netting of the skicross course in the FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup in Grindelwald, Switzerland on Saturday. The crash occurred on the course’s final jump.

Zoricic suffered multiple head injuries and died of severe neurotrauma at a nearby hospital.

English language video of the crash was unavailable at the time of publication. The video below shows the accident taking place. Please be forewarned that the video contains some footage that some readers may find disturbing, viewer discretion is advised.

The news of Zoricic’s death comes only two months after Sarah Burke, another high profile skicrosser and Winter X Games gold medalist, died after sustaining injuries during a training run on a superpipe in Utah in January.

Some have criticized skicross for being too dangerous. Ashleigh McIvor, Canadian skicross gold medalist, considers the risks of skicross to be more of an occupational hazard, telling Winnipeg television, “The fact is there are risks associated with our sport and pretty much everything I do in life. I’ve unfortunately lost a lot of friends in the mountains. My friends who are from the cities have lost a lot of friends to car accidents.”

This video shows the speed, close proximity to other skiers, and danger involved in competitive skicross.
