This year marks the third consecutive Winter Olympic Games that Burton Snowboards has been in charge in designing the US Snowboard Team’s uniforms.
“Back in 2006 and again in 2010, Burton stepped up to create the Olympic uniforms because we felt it was imperative that a snowboard company help drive the design around what riders want,” said Jake Burton, Founder & CEO of Burton Snowboards, in a news release. “Just like for Torino and Vancouver, the 2014 uniform was designed around feedback from some of the best American snowboarders to make sure that the design, fit and vibe represented our sport and our country in the best possible way.”
The uniform’s design, which was led by Burton’s Chief Creative Officer Greg Dacyshyn, was inspired by American heritage, including the flag and a vintage patchwork quilt. The uniform consists of technical outerwear jackets, pants, hats, gloves, base layers, and a fleece, which will be worn during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
The quilt that the uniform was modeled after was discovered by Burton designers at an antique fair. It was then taken to Vermont where it was deconstructed before being pieced together by a local quilt maker. It was this rough creation that the idea for the outerwear was based on. Replicas were made of the quilt along with an old American flag, which were then tied together to make the final product.

When the design was finalized, it was time to make sure the pieces stood up to Burton’s expectations as far as performance outerwear. Burton implemented advice from the US Army Natick Soldier RD&E Center that included the development of Burton’s DRYRIDE Vaporshell laminate, which will make its debut at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. The end product is a creative design that is both waterproof and breathable, able to take on all conditions.
“It’s kind of truly a handmade piece, so it’s got some stories behind it,” Olympic snowboarding hopeful Danny Davis said in a video interview (embedded below). “It’s not your typical uniform, which is awesome.”
Michael Jaquet, the Chief Marketing Officer for US Ski and Snowboard Association, said, “USSA is proud to have snowboarding’s most iconic brand as our Olympic Team Uniform partner. Burton has once again raised the bar on design, function and style with this kit and we congratulate them on once again capturing both the Olympic and American spirit in a uniform the athletes will be proud to wear.”
