During training for a World Cup event today, Austrian ski jumper Thomas Morgenstern endured a horrific crash that sent him to the hospital.

The three-time Olympic champion lost control while he was mid-flight before landing on his back and tumbling down the hill. He was unconscious directly following the crash, but regained consciousness and was able to speak after, according to the Austria Press Agency.

This is the second fall Morgenstern has had in the past month. In December, he fractured a finger and was left with bruises, cuts, and abrasions.

“I feel pretty strong pain all over my body but I hope it’s nothing really serious,” he said in a statement released by the International Ski Federation after the first crash. “But I think that the next days might get pretty hard.”

It is currently unknown what injuries he has suffered from today’s crash.

“Fortunately he was responsive, Thomas can move arms and legs. That’s very important,” said Team Physician Herbert Leitner, according to the New York Daily News. “He asked me what happened.”

He received first aid on the ski hill before being flown to a hospital near Salzburg, said Head Coach Alexander Pointner.
