For the fourth year in a row, Rich Froning has won the CrossFit Games for the men. In the women’s competition, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet took first place. Held for the fifth consecutive season in the StubHub Center in Carson, California, the Games took place from July 25-27 in order to crown the “Fittest on Earth.”
Although Froning’s record is impressive, he said this year’s event was the last time he’ll compete individually. He had a rough start, finishing 37th in the Triple 3—rowing 3,000 meters, 300 double-unders, and a three-mile run. While he walked for a portion of the run because of being dizzy, he made up for it near the end of the competition and ended up winning with a 50-point lead.
In the first five events, Leblanc-Bazinet earned three top-10 finishes and ended the competition with a 40-point lead. She said it was spending the last five years training smarter that helped her succeed at the Games. “I attacked more of my weaknesses. I worked my ass off,” she said, according to Outside.
One of the biggest challenges athletes face during the CrossFit Games is not knowing what event they’ll have to compete in next.
“It changes every year because that’s the beauty of the CrossFit Games. You need to be ready for anything, every year the tasks are different,” Leblanc-Bazinet told the National Post. “So, for example, this year our first event was 1,000 yards of swimming in the ocean with the huge waves and then kettlebell squats with burpees. Then you have another event, you need to do squats with a bar overhead with the most amount of weight. Another event is running and then you have to do pull-ups. They really try to test everything.”
