Wayne Allen Huntsman was arrested on an arson charge on Wednesday for “willfully and maliciously” starting a canyon wildfire in northern California last weekend that has blazed through 100 square miles so far, officials have stated. The 37-year-old is being held at the El Dorado County Jail on $10 million bail.

The fire was started in the town of Pollock Pines, which is located about 60 miles east of Sacramento. It grew from 28,000 acres to more than 71,000 overnight on Wednesday, and it is currently about 5 percent contained. More than 2,800 people have been evacuated from the area, including 12 firefighters who had to be airlifted from the area by helicopter after smoke and flames took over.

No serious injuries have been reported yet, and no structures have been damaged—only several cars.

While the authorities have refused to release the information regarding how they discovered Huntsman was behind the fire, they stated the investigation is ongoing. Huntsman’s sister, Tami Criswell, said she was “in shock” after hearing the news.

“If he was there, it was an accident or a misunderstanding,” said Criswell, according to The Wall Street Journal. “There’s no way he would ever intentionally do anything that could hurt other people or destroy the forest or property.”

There are more than 3,700 firefighters trying to combat what has become known as the King Fire, which is the largest wildfire in El Dorado County in 20 years. “It’s cooler and the conditions are in our favor, winds are in our favor,” Cal Fire crew member Brian Newman told NBC affiliate KCRA.
