Andrzej Bargiel, a ski mountaineer from Poland, set a new speed record for ascending Manaslu—the world’s eighth highest mountain, located in the Himalayas. The athlete was able to ascend from base camp (located at about 15,000 feet) to the 27,759-foot summit in just over 14 hours. The 26-year-old then skied back to the base camp in about seven hours, making a round trip time of 21 hours, 14 minutes. The feat was completed on September 25.
Although he planned to ski the entire way back to base camp, dense fog prevented him from skiing the whole way. If he would have been on skis for the entire descent, his time would have been even better.
The previous record was set by Benedikt Böhm from Germany, who had an ascent time of 15 hours and a round trip time of 23.5 hours. Bargiel also holds the speed record for ascending Europe’s tallest peak, Mount Elbrus, in 2010. He reached Elbrus’ summit in three hours, 23 minutes, and 37 seconds as part of the International Elbrus Race.
