Green Spaces Alliance will recognize National Food Day for the 3rd year in a row. This year, Beacon Hill community gardeners are opening their garden and their hearts to all for a beautiful evening of gardening, garden tours, kids’ food activities, a potluck dinner and film screening. Activities start at 5pm, the potluck begins at 6:30 pm and the film will start after dusk. Beacon Hill Community Garden is located at 1144 W. Gramercy Place, San Antonio, TX 78201. The event is free and open to the public.
The film this year is Fed Up, a 2014 documentary film that takes a look at the food industry and its impact on the obesity epidemic. Families are invited to bring chairs or blankets and a healthy food item to share. The Junior League of San Antonio’s Kids in the Kitchen program will be doing some fun, healthy food activities for kids.
Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas was founded in 1998 as Bexar Land Trust, Inc. The non-profit organization works with landowners who are interested in preserving open space, funds and facilitates community gardens in San Antonio, and educates children about nature through its outdoors photography program.
To date, we have helped protect over 126,000 acres of sensitive lands over the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone, safeguarded 458 additional acres of private property and 123 acres of donated land, fostered over 40 community gardens throughout disadvantaged neighborhoods and educated over 3,700 students on the importance and beauty of nature with our Picture Your World Youth Photography Program.
