A growing understanding of climbing’s health and fitness benefits has most certainly lead to the rise in popularity of the sport. Nowadays, it’s not just climbing enthusiasts taking part. Plenty of the regular gym-goers or other athletes climb to compliment their normal workout routines.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or an expert, indoor climbing arenas offer a safe way to practise the sport and you aren’t restricted by weather conditions or resources. Indoor arenas are often able to suit a range of different climbing styles and varying degrees of difficulties.
Edinburgh International Climbing Arena
Situated just outside the historic city of Edinburgh in Scotland, Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (EICA) is Europe’s largest indoor arena for climbing. The space it was built on was formerly a quarry, which has been converted to a fantastic facility for not only climbing, but strength and condition, fitness and elite sports teams, such as the British judo team.
Bouldering
Bouldering is a popular activity here, with over 400 square metres available to take advantage of. Within the main arena, there are three bouldering walls as well as a completely separate bouldering room. Perfect for the beginner and also an awesome challenge for those with more experience.
Climbing
The main tower route within the arena stands at 95ft tall, which is plenty challenging for even the fittest climbers. What makes the arena special is the amount of possible routes, not necessarily their height. In fact, there are around 300 routes, which means you’ll definitely find a fresh experience each time you visit. In total, there are around 2,400 square metres of climbing wall.
Aerial Assault
Whether you’re a climber or not, you’ll still find an adrenaline rush at the EICA. Suspended 100ft in the air, you have to make your way through a combination of ladders, netting and other obstacles. This opportunity is open to anyone above 145cm tall.
Family Adventures
The relatively new ‘Clip ‘n’ Climb’ requires absolutely no climbing experience, yet offers exciting challenges. From four years old, this part of the climbing centre is perfect for families to work together at your own pace, given that there are choices between easy, medium and hard routes.
Other Activities
If you’re not into climbing, but the party you’re with is, then you can rest in the café, take part in exercise classes, take advantage of the gym or relax in the spa. Take a look at what they have to offer here.
