ARBOLES, Colo. – Summer is in full swing at Navajo State Park. In addition to the many recreational opportunities available, events scheduled for this weekend include nature hikes, ancient art crafts for children, and another evening of musical fun with Sharman Alto and David Snyder.

On Saturday, June 11 at 10 a.m., join the park naturalist for a walk amidst the blooms. Navajo’s trails are awash with many summer hues resulting from dainty, look-at-me-closely flowers to bigger, showier blooms. Anticipate spending about 1.5 hours on the South Piedra Trail, identifying, examining and discussing nature’s colorful side. For this easy to moderate two-mile hike, meet at the trailhead located just north of the Windsurf Beach Campground main parking area.

Finger paints, paintbrushes and pipe cleaners aren’t just modern inventions that you find in a craft store. At 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, the Kids’ Corner activities will explore how art has been a part of human culture for thousands of years. Appropriate for ages three and older. Come to the Rosa Campground Camper Services patio. Younger children must be accompanied by an adult.

Also on Saturday, June 11, local musicians Sharman Alto and David Snyder provide another fun-filled evening starting at 7:30 p.m. Sharman and David will perform their wonderful mix of musical styles at the Rosa Campground Camper Services patio. With a range of blues and bluegrass to Celtic and other ethnic sounds, you’re bound to enjoy a toe-tapping experience. Bring an extra chair because seating is limited at this location. In the event of rain, Sharman and David’s performance will move to the Visitor Center Conference Room.

On Sunday, June 12 at 10 a.m., walk the old rail beds of Navajo State Park and learn about some of the features that make it unique – plants, animal signs, and human history, to name a few. Join the park naturalist on this easy three mile, two hour hike along the Windsurf Beach Trail to gain insight into some of Navajo’s treasures and to enjoy the views of the surrounding area. Meet at the Visitor Center.
