Picking the best camping site is pretty subjective — some people like a spot more remote while others may just want to be close to the restrooms at the campground. Narrowing down the best in camping by state is an even tougher task because of how much each state brings to the table. The adventure vehicle company Adventures on the Rock set out to quantify and analyze specific data sets to decide which is the best U.S. state for camping. Wyoming, the honor is yours.

This geographically large state with fewer than 600,000 residents was selected as the best state in America for camping, featuring the highest number of free campsites and RV parks relative to its population, according to Adventures on the Rock.

Overall, the factors analyzed within the index included the number of national parks and landmarks relative to state area, the number of hiking trails, RV parks and campsites relative to state population, average fuel prices, yearly average rainfall, diversity of plant and animal species, deaths per 10 million national park visits and deaths caused by dangerous animal or plant exposure. These factors were then scored on a scale of 1 to 10 to create an overall Camping Index Score out of 100 for all 50 states.

Wyoming had a Camping Index Score of 72.12. The Cowboy State was found to offer 26 RV Parks, 118 regular campsites, and 45 free campsites per 100,000 residents. The state also had the third highest number of hiking trails of any state, at 350 per 100,000 residents.

According to the rankings, Montana at 69.29 came in as the second best state for camping, offering the highest number of hiking trails and the second highest number of free and paid campsites. New Mexico rolled in at third with 65.94, scoring well across several factors.
