The Northern California chapter of the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA-NorCal) is proud to announce that the 8th Annual Randy Fry “Big X” Free Diving Tournament is set for Saturday, October 8, 2011. Open to all free divers, this tourney is in memory of the late Randy Fry, the avid abalone diver, fisherman, spearo and fisheries activist who dedicated his efforts to the rights of anglers and divers.
Proceeds of the tournament will benefit the RFA-NorCal Chapter, and family members and members of the public are welcome to join in for the day’s festivities including the raffle and weigh-in at 1pm. Entry fee is $40 in advance, $50 on the day of the event, and includes two nights free camping (self-contained RV’s are okay), a hot lunch, wine tasting, trophy awards, raffle and silent auction.
This year, there’s an all-new Wild Seafood “Iron Chef” Team Challenge open to teams of up to 10 who will be competing to prepare the best menu of wild seafood for Saturday night’s feast. Non-diving chefs can participate with divers; contestants battling for a team dive trip for up to 10 with Telstar Charters in Noyo Harbor for the 2012 season.
Contest location is at the Pacific Star Winery on the Mendocino County Coast, just 12 miles north of Fort Bragg at 33000 Highway One (near mile marker 73.50). RFA-NorCal has been extremely active in fighting against the arbitrary implementation of California’s marine life protection act, but – despite our continued efforts, this area too is proposed to become the Ten Mile State Marine Reserve next year. Help us continue the fight for your right to fish by joining RFA-NorCal at the 8th Annual Randy Fry “Big X” Free Diving Tournament on October 8, 2011.
