CANTON — The public is invited to attend the 17th Annual Maxwell Wildlife Refuge Mountain Man Rendezvous on Oct. 7-9. This living history event is a gathering of mountain men, Native American re-enactors, and other demonstrators of life in Kansas during the early 1800s. Primitive trapper camps, teepees, early-day Kansas demonstrations, Indian folklore, flint knappers, bird watching, and arts and crafts will be featured. Maxwell Wildlife Area is 6 miles north of Canton in McPherson County.
Primitive camping is available at the adjacent McPherson State Fishing Lake with no fees. Prairie tours of the refuge in the Friends of Maxwell tram will be conducted every hour — $8 for adults and $5 for children younger than 12. Kids three and younger can ride free. These tours offer a unique opportunity to view buffalo, and possibly elk, in a native Kansas prairie.
Those who plan to attend the event should phone 620-628-4455 or visit www.cyberkraft.com/maxwell for more information.
