The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of its newly revamped Gaston Boating Access Area on the Roanoke River, downstream of Roanoke Rapids dam, in Northampton County.

The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Feb. 24 at the access area on N.C. 48, at the north side of the Roanoke River Bridge. The renovated site features a new ramp with a floating dock and a paved parking lot. Single vehicle spaces are also available for bank anglers, and solar lights have been installed.

“This site provides a great option for anglers looking for an alternative to some of our busier spots during striper season,” said Dean Barbee, Piedmont regional supervisor for the Commission’s Division of Engineering Services. “It also provides great fishing and boating opportunities throughout the year, and the renovations make the site even more accessible.”

The renovations were funded through the Sport Fish Restoration Program and motorboat registration receipts.
