Vail Resorts, Inc. and the entire Vail community congratulate Olympic and World Alpine skiing champion Lindsey Vonn in becoming the first American ever to win four World Cup Overall titles after winning the Giant Slalom in Are, Sweden earlier today after already securing the downhill and combined titles with five World Cup races to go this season.
“Lindsey is having another season for the record books, as one of the most dominant athletes of her generation. Far from resting on her laurels, Lindsey is winning in new disciplines and topping her own record setting performances of prior seasons. For an American to now be mentioned in the same breath as the all-time greats in ski racing is an incredible achievement and something that everyone at Vail Resorts is so proud of,” said Rob Katz, chairman and chief executive officer of Vail Resorts. “Lindsey’s work ethic, preparation and dedication to excellence both on and off the mountain are simply unstoppable and we cannot wait to continue to watch her achievements for years to come.”
Already one of the most decorated athletes of her time, Vonn is also within a mere 170 points of becoming the first woman to surpass 2,000 points in a season. She has secured 11 wins this season, tying her own U.S. record, and 52 total World Cup wins to date, putting her in fifth for all-time wins for both men and women. Vonn was the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the downhill in 2010 and also took home a bronze in the Super G.
While she was born in Burnsville, Minn. in 1984, Vonn considers Vail her “hometown” as she and her family commuted to Vail for training for several years before finally moving there permanently in the late ’90s to further her racing career. Lindsey spent her formative years on Vail Mountain, honing her racing skills in all alpine disciplines with Ski & Snowboard Club Vail, then went on to achieve success in major U.S. and international events such as the Junior Olympics, Junior Worlds, NorAms and Europa Cup before entering the International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup circuit. When she’s not rigorously training or garnering medals, Vonn makes her home at the The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Vail.
Vail Mountain has supported Vonn throughout her career and Vonn now represents all six of Vail Resorts’ world-class mountain resorts–Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Heavenly and Northstar California.
