Discovery Yachts have announced that their new Discovery 57 will be the largest resin-infused sailing yacht to be produced in Great Britain. The new 57 is currently in build at the company’s Marchwood premises and will have its world debut at the Southampton Boat Show in September 2012.
Discovery Yachts decided, during the design stage of the new Discovery 57, to make the transition from traditional wet lay-up to vacuum infusion as it fitted the company’s core values of quality, safety and performance. Infusion gives the yacht a high quality, well consolidated laminate with reduced styrene emissions, in addition to the dual benefits of improved strength with reduced weight. By infusing the hull shell, Discovery have reduced the amount of resin used by over 500kg compared to wet lay-up, and for clients that means they do not have to carry 500kg of unnecessary resin around the world!
Production Director, Ben Collett commented, “I’m already delighted with the results and the hull weight is almost exactly as had been calculated. Discovery are renowned for the quality of our joinery but this achievement shows the depth of experience in our composites team and is the result of many months of planning and testing by us, supported by our suppliers who we have worked closely with. By utilising a one-part mould, we will produce a hull that starts life as a single integrated unit from a mould of the utmost rigidity and precision. This helps us produce a strong and accurate hull without having to join two halves together part way through the laminating cycle”
Media and prospective purchasers are welcome to visit the company’s purpose built manufacturing facility at Marchwood, near Southampton, to see the new Discovery 57 in production.
