Do you love snow sports but live in a region that makes quick alpine skiing or snowboarding trips near-impossible? Something like the Bay Area Snow Park may solve that problem.
The snow park’s organizers are currently fundraising in order for it to be built in San Jose, California. The technology that would make a snow park in San Jose possible 365 days a year is a synthetic turf that resembles snow, and even cushions like it, for those who are worried about falls.
The faux-snow surface is called Snowflex, which is the closest replication of snow that was invented by BRITON Engineering Developments. It is made of six different layers, requires no grooming, and has been awarded twice by the British Department of Trade and Industry.
The group helping to make the Bay Area Snow Park a reality is Snow School Inc., which is a pending non-profit organization that focuses on after-school sports as well as providing access to snow sports in the area.
According to the Kickstarter page, the goal is to raise $1 million by January 4, 2014. So far, it has raised almost $9,000. Clearly, there’s a long way to go, but the idea seems to have garnered quite a bit of attention.
If the park opens, daily lift tickets will be $37, and monthly memberships will be $60 per month plus a $200 one-time initiation fee. Season passes will not be available.
If the minimum funding goal of $1 million is reached, the park will include a slope that is 200 feet long and 100 feet wide. If the $4 million goal is reached, the slope will be 400 feet long and 200 feet wide. A $10 million funding goal would create a slope that is 650 feet long and 200 feet wide. As for the long-term goal, the organization is hoping to raise $18 million that would create a slope that is 800 feet long and 200 feet wide.
As for the money that is being raised, the entire amount will go toward creating the park and will not be used to pay salaries.
“The project is sized based on the amount of funding it receives from this crowd-source campaign,” the Kickstarter page reads. “With the support of the millions of snow sport enthusiasts and by the City of San Jose, we will bring this project to life. As a non-profit, we plan to give back a percentage of profits to local high schools who participate in our after school ski programs. The high schools will use the money for college scholarships.”
