Whoever said you slow down as you get older never met Larry Macon.
The 68-year-old Texas lawyer continues to break the record for most marathons run in a year, with his record in 2013 being a whopping 238 marathons. This is astonishing, considering that tackling just one can seem like a daunting task. Macon on the other hand has enjoyed running marathons and breaking his own world record since 2008, when he ran 105 marathons in a year and secured his first-ever Guinness World Record.
Before you start thinking Macon was born a crazy runner, let’s set the record straight. The whole thing began in 1996 when he attended a lunch with some lawyer friends and got caught up in a bragging competition. Once he told his fellow lawyers he was training for a marathon, they quickly promised to come and watch, thus forcing his hand. It was after that first marathon at the age of 52 when Macon found his calling. He quickly became addicted to the sport and began running as many marathons as possible.
This year Macon was not the only one racing for the title. Australian Trent Morrow believed himself to be in the lead by running 161 marathons, which would have beaten Macon’s previous record of 157 races, set in 2012. But once again, Macon was victorious, running sometimes up to two marathons a day, and at one point, 64 consecutive days in a row.
A running obsession is not cheap. Macon has traveled and competed in marathons on five continents and in all 50 states, meaning he has mastered the air of traveling by planes, trains, and automobiles. Now factor in the cost of marathon entries, hotel accommodations, and food, and you are looking at a pretty hefty sum. Not only that, but over the course of 12 months, Macon has worn out more than 24 pairs of running shoes. Talk about determination.
Despite the cost and the time, Larry has no intention of slowing down.
“It’s absolute insanity,” he told ABC news after completing his final race of the year. “Every [race] is a challenge. Every [race] is, ‘Hey, am I going to be able to make this one?’ Thus far, I’ve had 1,235 down. Who knows what will happen next time.”
