Bethany Hamilton, a professional surfer well-known for losing her left arm in a shark attack, took first place at the 2014 Surf N Sea Pipeline Women’s Pro at the Banzai Pipeline in Oahu, Hawaii over the weekend. In 2003, Hamilton was surfing at Tunnels Beach in Kauai when a tiger shark attacked her. The story of her survival was one of inspiration, and she wrote a book about the experience titled Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board, which was made into a movie in 2011.
This was the first event title the 24-year-old surfer has claimed in 10 years. The competition is an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 1-Star event and was held in three- to five-foot surf from March 11 to 21.
The final round came down to Moana Jones, Sayuri Hashimoto, Dax McGill, and Hamilton.
“It was fun. It wasn’t exactly Pipe but better than most spots around the world that I surf. I usually lose, so this was great,” said Hamilton, according to Surfer Today. “In my first heat, I got a little barrel, and I wasn’t even expecting it, but I always keep my eye out because you never know out here, and I kind of tucked in and I made it out and that was a pleasant surprise.”
Hamilton was also in the news this week for the promotion of an EPIX documentary titled The Current, which features athletes with disabilities after they get back into water sports. In a number of interviews, she has said she wants to show people how to look past her disability, seeing how talented of a surfer she really is. In order to get her message across, she’s also working with filmmaker Aaron Lieber on a new project that will showcase her skills.
“I’ve known [Bethany’s] brother for a few years and went on a trip with Bethany and Carissa Moore a few years ago,” said Lieber, according to Outside. “Then last year I was on a trip with Lakey Peterson and Bethany filming for Lakey’s movie Zero to 100. I knew Bethany was good, but after spending 10 days with her, I was just blown away, and we started discussing the project.”
“A lot of people just don’t know I can surf,” Hamilton continued.
