The newly released Suunto Aqua Headphones provide users a waterproof bone-conduction option that also has on-board music storage (up to 8,000 songs’ worth!) — making this new wearable lineup a strong complement to Suunto’s sport watches, which don’t currently have music storage capabilities.

The Aqua Headphones, which debuted today for $179, go a step further and offer an AI-powered algorithm for swimming — the device can identify stroke posture, head pitch angle, breath frequency, and glide time so you can track, analyze, and adjust your technique with the Suunto app for a more efficient swim. The algorithm can also monitor mobility as well as neck and muscle fatigue, while a featured called Head Movement Control lets you answer and hang up phone calls and change audio tracks hands-free.

“Suunto Aqua is designed to bring your audio experience during swimming, running, and biking to new heights (and depths), combining entertainment, training, and communication in one sleek device,” the company said when announcing the product.

Open-ear bone-conduction technology is popular among athletes because it is intended to keep your ears clear and allow you to be aware of your surroundings, making it comfortable and safe to use in both water and on land.

The Aqua has 32GB of storage (Bluetooth 5.3 + MP3), capable of housing songs, podcasts, and audiobooks. The official specifications list 30 hours of battery life in total (10 hours of play time and 20 hours with the included charging pod). And like most current Suunto products, these devices charge exceptionally fast: They’re fully charged in under an hour and offer three hours of playback from just a 10-minute charge.

“The Suunto Aqua is ready to go as soon as you are,” as they say.

The Aqua comes on the heels of two other bone-conduction headphones that Suunto launched in 2024: Suunto Wing and Suunto Sonic. Those first two launches were tailored to runners, so the Aqua differentiates itself with the underwater capabilities, the artificial intelligence to manage training and body fatigue and the on-board storage.

Playlists can be easily managed through the mobile Suunto App, saving the hassle of tedious PC downloads. The headphones weigh just 35 grams and have an IP68 rating and is made to withstand depths of up to 5 meters in open water for two hours. (Suunto says that’s the deepest available for bone conduction headphones on the market.)
