On Sunday, a participant in the Endure Batavia Triathlon in Australia was hit by a drone that fell from the sky.
Raija Ogden was on her second lap of the running portion of the race when she was struck in the head by the drone, sending her to the ground. Ogden is the wife of Courtney Ogden, who took second place in the triathlon. The drone was owned and operated by New Era Photography and Film, which had a group of local videographers taking footage of the event. She was taken to the hospital immediately following the incident.
Warren Abrams, owner of New Era Photography and Film, said the circumstances of the situation were suspicious.
“We will be conducting a full investigation of what happened, but it looks as though someone has hacked into our system,” he said, according to sUAS News. Although the company will be looking into the matter, Abrams said he did not believe the drone actually struck Ogden.
“She looks over her shoulder and gets frightened, falling to the ground and bumping her head, but the drone didn’t actually strike her,” he told The West Australian. “I’ve had the drone for more than a year, and this is the first time it’s crashed.”
Ogden told The West Australian, “I have lacerations on my head from the drone and the ambulance crew took a piece of propeller from my head. My hair was completely red with blood. I didn’t hit the ground, I sat down because I just thought I was going to pass out.”
A statement was also released from the Geraldton Triathlon Club, which hosts the triathlon.
“In relation to the incident that occurred today at the Endure Batavia Triathlon involving an aerial camera and competitor Raija Ogden, the Geraldton Triathlon Club wish to state their sincere apologies to Mrs. Ogden,” it read. “Mrs. Ogden has been treated by paramedics on location and the club [has] been advised she is in a stable condition following the incident, with minor injuries sustained to her head.”
Representatives from the club are working with New Era to help determine the cause of the accident.
“This incident should never have occurred and a full investigation will be conducted in conjunction with the videographers involved,” it continued.
Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority is also conducting its own investigation.
