For skiers serious about adventure, whether resort-based or backcountry focused, finding the best turns always involves some element of going uphill. With that unifying theme, Outdoor Research unveils a new ski collection for Fall 2014, offering a continuum of ski styles for everyone from freeride-focused skiers to those dedicated to skiing far in the backcountry.
Regardless of ski style, all of the new ski apparel from Outdoor Research offers feature sets with the functionality to hike or tour for turns – details like backpack-compatible venting, secure pockets designed with clip-in points for avalanche transceivers, and zip-out powder skirts. Add to that the latest fabric technology, like a soft shell Pertex Shield+ fabric, a first-to-market technology co-developed by Pertex and Outdoor Research that melds soft shell, waterproof/breathable laminate, and grid fleece into one layer, and the results are category redefining.
Trickshot Jacket and Pants
Offering a first-to-market fabric technology designed to meet the demands of the modern freeride skier, the Trickshot Jacket and Pants are ski-focused waterproof soft shells that seamlessly meld an uphill-oriented feature set with downhill-focused durability and style. A new soft shell Pertex Shield+ fabric, co-developed by Pertex and Outdoor Research, combines a stretchy, durable soft shell exterior, a waterproof Pertex laminate, and a warm grid-fleece backer into one highly effective, waterproof and breathable layer. A relaxed fit and stretch allows the jacket and pants to accommodate a skier’s movements. On the uphill, double-sliding CrossFlo zippers on the jacket and inner and outer thigh vents on the pants allow quick, efficient ventilation even while wearing a pack. Jacket details include an in-pocket goggle wipe with tether, a removable powder skirt with LockDown technology that integrates with the pants to seal out snow, ThumbDrive wrist closures that integrate with undercuff gloves, an internal Shove-It pocket, and a helmet-compatible hood. In the pants, finer points include an avalanche beacon pocket with clip-in retention, reinforced scuff guards, and stretch-mesh internal gaiters with ski boot power strap slots. Men’s and women’s fit options in the jacket and pants. Jacket, $425; Pants, $350.
White Room Jacket and Pants
Armed with the ultimate skier-focused feature set for chasing perfect lines in deep snow, the new Outdoor Research White Room Jacket and Pants pair a stretchy, waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX fabric with a polyester flannel backing for a touch of warmth and superb comfort on the inside. Versatility is the name of the game when chasing adventurous lines, so the White Room collection goes uphill as well as it goes down. Unique CrossFlo chest-to-hip zippers on the jacket allow quick ventilation while wearing a pack, and inner and outer thigh vents on the pants allow you to similarly dump heat quickly on the uphill track. LockDown technology offers a way to connect the removable powder skirt to the pants, sealingout unwanted snow on even the deepest of days. ThumbDrive cuff construction on the jacket either adjusts the tightness of the cuff or can be converted to a thumb loop for compatibility with undercuff gloves. Finer points include a pass-through pocket with media port, internal Shove-It pockets for gloves and goggles, an in-pocket goggle wipe with tether on the jacket, an avalanche beacon pocket with clip-in retention, reinforced scuff guards, and stretch-mesh internal gaiters with ski boot power strap slots on the pants. Jacket, $550; Pants, $475.
Stormbound Jacket
Built to provide ultimate warmth and weather protection for big-mountain skiers, the new Stormbound Jacket pairs both 650-fill down and strategically placed synthetic Thermore insulation inside a waterproof/breathable Pertex Shield+ shell. In a unique and highly effective construction twist, the down is held in place inside the jacket by direct-bonding the lining to the shell fabric, which helps shed weight. A heathered face fabric with unique horizontal stitching keeps style points in check. Equipped with double-sliding pit zippers, a removable powder skirt with LockDown Technology that integrates with pants to seal out snow, a media point, an in-pocket goggle wipe on a tether, an adjustable, helmet-compatible hood, and internal Shove-It pockets, the Stormbound Jacket overlooks no skier-focused detail. Men’s and women’s fit options. $495.
Trailbreaker Jacket and Pants
Backcountry skiing is a delicate game of balancing weather protection in adverse conditions with ventilation and moisture management for the uphill. Finding the right balance can be tricky. Enter the new Trailbreaker Jacket and updated Trailbreaker Pants, which meld a highly breathable, double-weave soft shell fabric with key areas of waterproof Pertex Shield+ soft shell fabric in areas where additional weather protection is needed. The waterproof/breathable Pertex Shield+ soft shell is used in the hood, shoulders, knees and lower legs – areas that are more exposed to the elements. The more breathable soft shell material in the main body of the jacket and upper areas of the pants balances weather protection with allowing heat to escape on the uphill, and the large pit zips on the jacket and thigh vents on the pants can be opened for increased ventilation. Jacket, $250; Pants, $225.
