Sperry has always been known for creating a high-quality shoe for those who love the water. So, it didn’t really surprise me that when I received my pair of SON-R Pulse Thong Sandals to review for ActionHub, they had once again succeeded at creating a comfortable and durable product.
At first glance, I loved the simplicity of the design. Though the sandal is available in a variety of bright colors, my tan pair was great for wearing with any outfit.
Unlike your classic flip-flop, or even your basic sandal that might be flimsy, these shoes are made for rugged, outdoor use. Still, they are seemingly light and easy to transport. They are also just as easy to slip on as your traditional flip-flops, but offer the added benefit of remaining comfortably in place. As someone with a slightly narrow foot, I was pleased that these shoes were so true to size and kept my feet from sloshing around like they tend to do in other sandals.
Just as the upper gripped to my feet, the grip of the sole was equally impressive. The Hydro-Grip rubber outsoles created great traction on any surface. I felt stable and comfortable strolling the beach, the boardwalk, and even balancing on the rocky pebbles around a waterbed as I jumped off my friend’s boat. The sole is also fairly durable, showing little wear after being worn on long walks and protecting my feet from blisters and foot fatigue.
With much more support than your average sandal, Sperry’s newest model features something called SON-R Technology, which, with the help of metatarsal pods, improved sensory feedback, helping the wearer experience the surface beneath them. Though I could feel a small difference when changing surfaces, I was glad this new feature did not allow rocks and harder surfaces to hurt the soles of my feet. What it did do is create a cushion where my foot could sink a bit into the shoe, providing a bit of a pop in my step.
Originally, I was concerned about getting the sandals wet because of the nice leather. And though I would not suggest these sandals for swimming or heavy water wear, I was impressed by how quick they dried, as well as how the material seemed unharmed by the encounter with water. This was especially important as I continued to walk throughout the day without receiving water blisters on the tops of my feet or between my toes.
