So, Olympics got you pumped? Time to jump up and off the couch, and onto the snowy trails.

Then how about a cross-country ski marathon in March?

Okay, a marathon is daunting, but many of these long-distance races have touring components, and options where skiers don’t have to do the whole 26 long miles.

Maybe do half. Forget the time clock.

Here’s the rundown on a few states’ popular events.

    Maine

Western Maine is home to the March 16 Maine Huts and Trails Ski Marathon and Tour. Maine Huts and Trails is a unique project, a growing collection of lodgings along a hiking trail that will be 180 miles long when complete. Four of the planned 12 lodges exist along the 80 miles of trail now constructed.

This point-to-point adventure contains routes of 20K, 40K, and 60K through the wilds of Carrabassett Valley, not far from the Appalachian Trail in this classical ski race.

    New Hampshire

A fundraiser for the New England Ski Museum, the March 8 Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon takes place on some storied real estate at the base of New Hampshire’s Mount Washington. The trails held the 1982 US National Championships, where cross-country ski luminaries Bill Koch (winner of a 1976 silver Olympic medal) and Tim Caldwell competed. Winners have included Olympians like Dorcas Wonsavage and Justin Freeman, whose brother Kris competed at Sochi. There is a full marathon and half marathon in classic ski technique. You can sign up here.

    Montana and California

The American Ski Marathon Series crosses the country with events in both cities and rural villages. The idea is to challenge veterans and also encourage new skiers. Each event has ski distances from 25 to 50 kilometers. There’s also a festive spirit with sideshows like demos and kid-friendly short courses. The Yellowstone Rendezvous on March 8 is in some spectacular landscapes along the Continental Divide near the west entrance of Yellowstone Park in Montana. Or, try the March 16 California Gold Rush in Soda Springs through the rugged Sierra Nevada at the Royal Gorge XC Center. Sign up and learn more here.

    Michigan

The 2014 Portage Health Great Bear Chase Ski Marathon at Swedetown Trails in Calumet, Michigan offers a wealth of opportunities for all levels and styles of skiers. The March 8 contest has allows both classic and skate technique in 50-, 25-, and 10-kilometer distances. The long-standing chase started in 1981 by Rick Oikarinen and Bob Gregg as a way to show off Michigan’s Keweensaw Peninsula. The race has had from 30 skiers to hundreds. Be one. Learn more here.

    Alaska

Ready for the 27th Sonot Kkaazoot in Fairbanks? For those who don’t speak Athabaskan, that roughly translates to “springtime slide your feet across the snow.”

The race is not only a test of endurance but also a way to welcome the return of sunshine to Alaska’s interior. Local legend Melissa Lewis, a mother of two and Masters skier, has won the race seven times between 1993 and 2011, often going against high school and college athletes. Though the course has changed over the years, the enthusiasm hasn’t. Held this year on March 29, racers can choose from a 50-kilometer classical skate and 20-, 40- and 50-kilometer freestyle.

    New York

Here’s where you really can ski in the tracks of Olympians. The Lake Placid Loppet on March 8 has a 50-kilometer and 25-kilometer course over the trails used in the 1980 Winter Olympics. That was the year Soviet skier Nikolay Zimyatov became the first male cross country skier to win three gold medals at single Olympics.

The Mount Van Hoevenberg trails are challenging and weekend warriors may want to take the opportunity to do the race at more of a touring pace. There’s some 1,600 feet of climbing for the short course and double that for the longer route. Learn more here.
