    Outdoor Activities in Boone, N.C.

Boone is definitely a paradise for hikers, offering trails that cater to everyone from casual walkers to seasoned trekkers. For a more family-friendly hike, head to Elk Knob State Park, where you can enjoy well-maintained trails and panoramic views from the summit. The Mount Jefferson State Natural Area also offers several trails that vary in difficulty, with breathtaking overlooks of the surrounding mountains.

Just 15 minutes drive from downtown Boone, you’ll find access to the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway, where there are plenty of great hikes and views. For something a little more gentle and family-friendly, opt for the 2.2-mile Price Lake Loop or the Boone Fork Trail. The full trail runs for about 5 miles, with a large section following a peaceful stream. There is also an option to hike down to the beautiful Hebron Falls, where kids, adults, and even dogs can splash around in some of the natural pools.

For those seeking a more challenging adventure, the Grandfather Trail at Grandfather Mountain is a must. Known for its rugged terrain and stunning vistas, this hike is perfect for experienced hikers looking to push their limits. The trail is incredibly fun with ladders and cables to scale the rugged terrain — but it is definitely not for the faint of heart! Hike less than 1 mile to MacRae peak or roughly 2.5 miles to Calloway peak for some of the best views in the region!

Nearby, you’ll find the Rough Ridge Overlook Trail — one of my personal favorites. This short but sweet hike along the parkway packs a punch with nearly 360-degree views from the top. It’s ideal for either sunset or sunrise and the wildflowers in the summer are breathtaking!

If water activities are more your speed, Boone’s rivers and lakes won’t disappoint. Watauga River and New River offer fantastic kayaking opportunities. The gentle currents of the New River make it an ideal spot for beginners and families, while the more adventurous can tackle the rapids of the Watauga River. Local outfitters provide guided tours and equipment rentals, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. However you choose to enjoy the outdoors, please make sure you help preserve the awe of Boone by practicing responsible recreation (e.g., following principles of Leave No Trace)!

    Scenic Views

The natural beauty of Boone is evident pretty much everywhere. It doesn’t take a rigorous hike to enjoy many of Boone’s best scenic vistas. A drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway is a must-do, with its winding roads offering gorgeous views at every turn. The Rough Ridge Overlook is a popular stop, as well as the Linn Cove Viaduct. An engineering marvel that gracefully curves around the rugged terrain of Grandfather Mountain, this is my favorite spot on the entire parkway!
